Finishes
Materials and finishes
The right finish makes steel last. Here is what we recommend for each kind of work.
| Finish | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Shop primer | Internal steel that will be hidden or boxed in | Lowest cost; touch up after installation |
| Paint system | Internal exposed steel, large structural steel, site repairs | Any colour; can be recoated |
| Hot-dip galvanising | External steel, lintels, balcony frames | Long life outdoors; dull grey finish that weathers |
| Powder coating | Stairs, balustrades, gates and railings | Hard, even colour finish in RAL colours |
| Duplex (galvanised + powder coat) | External metalwork you see | Longest life outdoors, with colour |
| Intumescent coating | Exposed steel that needs fire resistance | Thin-film fire protection for a rated period |
| Stainless steel | Handrails, coastal and hygienic settings | No coating needed; higher material cost |
Steel grades
Most structural steel we supply is S355, with S275 where specified. Read S275 vs S355 explained.
